Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt could be the next pop force we all need. Following support from Ed Sheeran and a folk/pop-inspired debut album in 2013 (which peaked at #11 on the UK album charts), it appears that the 21-year-old has gone through an artistic reinvention as she prepares to unleash her seventh extended play, Modern Love, set for a February release date. To support the edgy, new look and sound, Nesbitt shared the addictive "Chewing Gum", a Tove Lo-sounding, sultry, radio ready effort that should get people to take notice.
"Chewing Gum" does open with an instrumental intro eerily similar to "Talking Body", but all is forgiven when the first listen of Nesbitt's alluring, confident vocal performance is heard. The artist warns her temporary lover that what they have in the moment, certainly won't last forever. With a clever premise, using someone until the excitement is gone, and risque delivery and production, the new single is a promising taste of Nesbitt's future career trajectory.
The synth/pop track differs vastly from any of the artist's previous releases, and allows her to properly compete in 2016. While all components work in the song's overall success, the honest, blunt and sass-filled songwriting shines the brightest. "Oh, you know that I'm down for whatever, I told you that it won't be forever, oh how come you still think that you're the one, baby I'm just chewing gum. until the flavor's gone," she teases on the chorus.
The new single is a strong reintroduction for Nesbitt, following a two-year absence from the music scene. "Chewing Gum" will be compared to other artists, as I just did, but there's something about the artist's dark and mysterious new image, paired with a killer new sound, that will help her stand out from the crowd. Incorporating electronic-influences into the mix of her original material is a smart move, one that should undoubtedly pay off.
As Nesbitt readies her upcoming EP, the artist's moderately successful past chart success could work to her advantage. Still a relative unknown in most parts of the world, especially in the U.S., a song like "Chewing Gum" could catch on with proper promotion, solid live performances and the ever-desired viral hit status. If you're looking for a new artist to cheer for, who's putting out top notch singles to dance and break hearts to... you don't have to look any further. Just don't call it a comeback.
