Harden previously had a shoe deal with Nike but they refused to match Adidas offer. So Adidas came at the right time when James was sneaker free. Adidas needs a high profile star to lead its push back into the U.S.market.
Adidas had in 2012 signed a huge 14 year contract with Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose but they have not seen many dividends from that contract as a result of Injury and sales of Rose shoe has not surpassed those of Nike's James Lebron, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant.
