This time by Buck.
He wrote a post about all the autos he's had... or most of them anyway. Among those he mentioned was a 1965 Volkswagen.
That brought mind that I'd owned a 1964 VW I'd bought used in December 1965. It was the second car I ever owned, replacing a '57 Chevy Bel Air. I had that VW for almost five years until I drove it, roof first, into the ground.

It all happened innocently enough. A coworker and I had gone out for dinner after work and were returning to pick up his car. We were driving northbound in the right-hand lane on the El Camino Real across from Stanford Stadium, in fron of Palo Alto High School, approaching Embarcadero Road. In those days the speed limit was 45mph and I was using all of it. Suddenly a swifter vehicle, which I believe was a Porsche, overtook us in the middle lane and veered right, into my lane. The result of my reaction caused the VW to trip, bounce on its roof, and land upright on Embarcadero Road blocking the two eastbound lanes. The other car continued as if nothing happened. A friend, who happened to be a Palo Alto cop, suggested afterward that I could be cited for failure to negotiate a straightaway [that's funny now, not so much then].
Fortunately, my coworker and I were uninjured, except for being extremely sore the next day or two. We never did find out who was in the other car and I replaced the VW with a '69 Ford Torino GT fastback that passed everything on the road except a gas station.

The Torino was a target. It was hit in parking lots on three different occasions and also hit in a food fight at a picnic. I replaced it fairly soon with a 1969 Alfa Romeo Spyder. It was a fun car...

Unlike Buck I'm not going to go into detail about every car [I don't remember all of the details]. I will tell you that I tend to keep vehicles for a long time if they serve me well. I sold my Ford Ranger pickup after twelve years, and that was because I just couldn't justify keeping a vehicle I only drove about once a month.
None of the cars pictured are the actual cars I had, but you'd be hard pressed to know the difference
