Hi, if it wasn’t obvious from the pictures yet, I am from the Netherlands! My name is Jasper and I am 22 years old. Some people might be wondering, why would someone from the Netherlands even go to Germany? Because I live close to the German border, I already come in contact with Germans a lot. I just absolutely love everything about their culture! Carnival is part of this great culture!
Even though we celebrate carnival in the Netherlands as well, I have never experienced it like this before. In the region I am from, it’s not really a big thing. There might be some parties held where people dress up, but that’s about it. In the southern regions it is celebrated a lot more. So when we went to Cologne and I saw people celebrating in the streets, it was a whole new experience for me!
Our morning started really early because our German friends told us that we would have to go as early as possible to get the most out of this day. We wandered around the city of Cologne and everywhere we went there were people that were dressed up. As tradition goes, at 11:11 on this day the party really starts! We spent the whole day eating, drinking and just admiring all the great costumes that people had to offer.What impressed me the most was that everywhere we went there were people partying. It felt like the whole city was alive and it didn’t matter much where we would go. That is a really big contrast with how I am used to in the Netherlands. If the opportunity in the future occurs, I would definitely go back to Germany to celebrate carnival again!
